Many historians have argued that
World War I was the first Total War.
By that they mean that it was the first time in history that fighting a
war meant engaging virtually evey part of society in that war
effort.
Below are five pictures that help to illustrate ways in which the
"homefront" supported the troops on the front lines and helped, in
their own, to try and defeat the enemy. Begin by clicking on the digital story link above to view a slide show of WWI
propaganda. For each image, answer the following questions 1) What symbols are present? What does each symbol represent? 2) What was the purpose of this piece? To whom was it supposed to appeal? 3) Specifically, what was the goal of this piece? 4) What stereotypes or myths are perpetuated by this piece of art? It may be necessary for you to pause or replay the slide show a few times. For homework, look at each image below and answer the following: 1) What home front activity is depicted by the image? 2) How did this activity help the war effort? |
